Conductor
Marcello Cormio

Marcello Cormio, a native of Trani, South Italy, has been performing for
many years both as a conductor and as a pianist, in USA, Italy, Portugal, Belgium,
and France. His work is always highly appreciated for a profound insight of the
score and an extremely refined sense of musical details. His professional experience
in the operatic field is remarkable, both as conductor and as coach/accompanist.
Among his upcoming engagements as conductor are a concert with the San Antonio
Symphony Orchestra in December and an all-Rachmaninov festival
in South Italy in
2012.
Last year he has led a very successful production of Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte
as Guest Conductor at the Bay View Summer Music Festival (MI). In 2010 he was
appointed First Assistant Conductor and Cover Conductor at the
Sarasota
Opera (FL), where he has worked on productions of Cavalleria Rusticana,
Pagliacci, Verdi’s Giovanna d’Arco and Rossini's La Cenerentola.
Currently, Mr. Cormio is an Assistant for the Symphony Orchestra and for the
Opera at the University of Kentucky, Lexington.
Starting in 2007, Mr. Cormio has
served as Assistant Conductor, Musical Coach, Diction Coach and Accompanist at
the Indiana University Opera Theatre, in Bloomington, IN.
His repertoire as a conductor
is equally considerable in the symphonic and operatic field, ranging from the 18th
century to the most contemporary works.
Prior to his experience in the USA, in Europe he was seen at the head of
different professional orchestras and collaborating with distinguished soloists,
among them pianist Aldo Ciccolini. In 2005 he was the conductor and music
director of the Contemporary Music Ensemble “Makrokosmos” in Italy.
Mr. Cormio earned a Master of Music in Instrumental Conducting at the Jacob
School of Music of Indiana University, studying with Professors David Effron and
Arthur Fagen. In this context he has experienced a number of conducting and
assistant conducting opportunities, at the head of different orchestras.
At Indiana
University he has also had the opportunity to study with some prominent conductors,
such as Leonard Slatkin, Jorge Mester, Herbert Blomstedt. He has moreover taken
part in international conducting master classes with Donato Renzetti and Larry
Rachleff.
His previous musical studies in Italy had earned him diplomas in
Piano, Instrumental Conducting, Composition, as well as a Master’s Degree
and
a PhD in History and Critical Study of the Musical Heritage.
In 2006 Mr. Cormio
was a “Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholar”, being the recipient
of a prestigious scholarship which brought him first to the United States.
