Introduction

The GMEA Emerging Leaders Program is designed to identify and empower the next generation of music educators in Georgia. Recognizing that leadership is a skill honed through mentorship, reflection, and practice, this year-long cohort-based experience offers a unique opportunity for early-to-mid-career educators to deepen their impact within their district and across the state. Through a series of collaborative workshops, interactive sessions, and direct engagement with GMEA’s governing structure, participants will develop the practical leadership tools necessary to shape the future of music education in our state. We invite you to join this community of passionate peers as we work together to build a sustainable and innovative legacy for Georgia’s students.

Program Pillars & Growth

The GMEA Emerging Leaders Program is built on four central pillars designed to provide a comprehensive leadership foundation. Through this experience, participants will bridge the gap between classroom excellence and organizational leadership.

  • The "Inside Track" (Organizational Literacy) - Gain a deep understanding of the "how" and "why" behind GMEA’s governance. You will have direct access to GMEA leadership and staff to see how our organization operates, from the Executive Committee to local District Leadership.

  • Real-World Impact (Effective Advocacy) - Move beyond volunteering and learn to take an active organizational role. You will develop the skills to communicate the value of music education to administrators, parents, and community stakeholders, helping to shape the future of our events.

  • The Power of WE (Collaborative Leadership) - Leadership isn't meant to be done in isolation. You will build a network of peers and mentors across the state, creating a space to share best practices and solve challenges common to Georgia music programs.

  • The Finale (Professional Recognition) - The journey culminates at the 2027 GMEA In-Service Conference. Upon completing the program, you will "graduate" on stage during the Opening Session with exclusive recognition from the association and your peers.

The Program Roadmap

The Emerging Leaders Program is organized into three distinct phases, taking you from organizational orientation to active leadership and final recognition.

Phase 1: Spring Deep Dive (Spring 2026)

  • "The GMEA Blueprint": A virtual session with GMEA leadership (including Alan Fowler and Andy Esserwein) to explore organizational structure, finances, and advocacy efforts (April 2026).

  • District Engagement: Attend your local Spring District Meeting to observe GMEA governance at the grassroots level.

Phase 2: The Practicum (August 2026 – January 2027)

  • The District Role: Transition from volunteer to an active organizational role, such as helping manage clinic logistics or a specific event task.

  • Fall District Meeting: Attend your fall meeting with a focus on understanding event logistics and district business operations.

  • Mid-Practicum Meeting: Participate in a second virtual cohort session in September 2026 to discuss your chosen volunteer roles and key takeaways from district involvement.

  • Leadership Interview: Conduct a professional interview with a current state or district leader to discuss organizational philosophy and growth.

Phase 3: Capstone & Celebration (2027 ISC)

  • Reflection: Join a final cohort meeting in January 2027 to share your experiences, insights, and lessons learned throughout the year.

  • The Finale: Celebrate your achievements with a public "graduation" on stage during the Opening Session of the 2027 In-Service Conference.
